Jerry Garcia and Merle Saunders

It is strange to me how many people myself included were not very keen on the Deads playing post 93 (Well for some of you it is post 77)yet I am wondering if too much of the blame is put towards Garcia? I started going to JGB shows in 93 after I stopped touring and damn the old man was on fire. I do not have any specific dates but every Jerry band show I saw was smoking!(I probably caught 10 JGB shows after not touring anymore.)

Favorite Jerry in person>Garcia on Broadway!
Favorite era>1975
p.s-there is an acoustic recording of Jerry playing at a California prison that is very cool!

Favorite shows - 11/4/81, 3/7/82, 5/31/83 If you haven't listened to a SBD of 3/7/82, please do. Most of the other stuff I've heard pales in comparision. Mid 70's with Merl is too lite sounding for me. '76-'77, the songs were played too slow for me. Reconstruction was too disco'ish and didn't feature enough Jerry for me. And anything after spring '84 isn't worth listening because there is too much good stuff from '81-'84. Though I still do throw on some '89-'90 stuff every once in a while. I think there is a run from Shoreline or Cal Expo during early August '90 where the material was used for the first JGB double live album. This was a wonderful run, and only bad recordings available but best I heard in the 90's. During the early 80's, Garcia was on the top of game, the peak of his career. I'd have to saya the the highest energy JGB I've heard via and audience recording is Cohen's recording of 5/31/83. The Rhapsody in Red will knock your socks off

Favorite tape that got me hooked on '81-'84 JGB - 12/2/83 soundboard. Very clean recording available with the most soulful Garcia I've heard howling on all his best JGB tunes. Fall '83 was a great tour for the Dead, but Jerry seemed to harness that energry and probably some good smack for what many have said was one of the best Garcia tours during Nov/Dec of '93. Probably my favorite "Melody", "Masterpiece", "Someday Baby" and a tie for my favorite "Tangled" with 3/7/82...3/7 is tough to beat.
